Nicholas Riemer, co-founder of The Invigilator, tackled a major challenge when the COVID-19 virus turned the world upside down. Since then, the AI-powered platform has grown rapidly, now supporting over 850,000 active users across more than 100 institutions.
Nicholas sat down with Brian Thomas, host of Coruzant Technologies’ Home of the Digital Executive Podcast, to give a behind-the-scenes look at how The Invigilator is reshaping education, where student accessibility and academic integrity go hand in hand.
Supporting wider participation in formal education
Nicholas explains how inclusivity was the primary driving force behind our online exam-monitoring app. Once small pockets of students quickly made way for entire schools and universities across Africa, allowing students to write as many assessments as they wanted to online, but doing so in a credible manner.
It empowered more learners to study on their own terms, removing geographic barriers and making education truly accessible.

From the start, we wanted to build a system where there’s simply no place to hide. If a student tries to cheat, our AI picks up suspicious behaviour immediately, starts recording, and gathers the exact evidence needed. That means examiners don’t waste time digging through hours of footage; they get fast, focused insights that make it easier to review incidents and protect the credibility of every assessment.
But just as important as security is accessibility. We designed The Invigilator so students can write secure, high-stakes exams without needing constant internet or expensive devices. By removing the reliance on physical venues, we also cut travel and logistical costs, giving institutions the ability to assess more regularly and giving students the freedom to study and write exams wherever and whenever it suits them.
