How Does Remote Assessment Monitoring/Proctoring Work?

With the ongoing shift towards online education, the need for innovative solutions to ensure academic integrity during assessment sessions is enormous. If you’re here, you may be wondering how remote assessment session monitoring actually works.

The Invigilator App is a monitoring/proctoring tool that monitors remote assessments. This technology driven solution is designed to mimic the role of a traditional invigilator, using a combination of artificial intelligence and human facilitation to authenticate the assessment process and flag suspicious data collected during an assessment. Let us take a closer look at the process.

Access and Identity Verification

The first step is to ensure that the correct student is admitted to the assessment session. This is done by sending the test-taker a QR code prior to the commencement of the assessment. The test-taker then scans or types in the QR code on his/her Invigilator App to start the invigilation. Facial recognition is used to verify the students’ identity against their master file photograph and GPS information will confirm their location.

Prevent External Input

The Invigilator App performs randomized audio and video recordings during the assessment and AI technologies analyze these audio and video recordings and will flag any activities that seem suspicious. Once the assessment session has been completed facilitators/examiners will be able to review the flagged activities. The audio and video recordings are aimed to prevent students from receiving any unauthorized assistance during the assessment.

Monitor Activity on Laptop/Desktop

A crucial feature is the app’s ability to monitor any sources accessed by the test-taker during the assessment session. Randomized screen captures are taken of the computer screen and any monitors attached to the device. Suspicious sources (for example AI assisted tools, browser searches, web WhatsApp, open mailboxes) are flagged for the facilitator’s attention.

Examiners can choose from various risk-mitigating tools, depending on the level of assurance required for each exam or assessment.

The Student’s Process

To prevent disruptions on the assessment day, students must download and test the proctoring software prior to the assessment. This ensures compatibility and familiarity with the app.

On the assessment day, students will open the Invigilator App and scan/type in the QR code in order to start the invigilation.

While technology plays a huge role, human interaction is still important to the process. Once all the invigilation results have been collected, facilitators/examiners can access all results on a user-friendly dashboard and ascertain whether academic dishonesty did indeed take place.

This invigilation software offers an affordable, scalable, efficient and consistent solution to the challenges posed by online assessments and exams.
